An enlightening awareness programme on Sexual Harassment and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 was conducted at TTE College, Rosamystica, Kinnikambla with the aim of educating students on personal safety, legal rights, and protection against abuse. The event saw the active participation of around 70 students along with faculty members on August 19, 2025.
The programme began at 10.20 am with a warm welcome address by Mrs. Lavina, Principal of the College. The occasion was graced by the presence of Sr Illene, coordinator of Jeevandhara, who served as the day’s resource person, along with Sr Aruna, Coordinator of Shubadha Society, Mrs Rekha Pais, staff of Jeevandhara, and the lecturers of the DEd College.
In her session, Sr Illene highlighted the pressing issue of sexual harassment and guided students on how to face it by being aware of their rights, remaining calm, documenting incidents, reporting to the Internal Complaints Committee, and seeking counselling and family support for recovery. She further addressed the sensitive topic of child sexual harassment, explaining the signs of abuse such as withdrawal, depression, avoidance of certain people, behavioural changes, and disturbances in academics or health.
A major focus of the session was on the POCSO Act (2012), a landmark law ensuring the safety and dignity of children below 18 years. Students were made aware of concepts such as good touch and bad touch, the mandatory reporting of offences, child-friendly procedures during investigations, confidentiality of the child’s identity, and the establishment of special courts for speedy trials. The resource person also stressed the stringent punishments under the Act, including imprisonment and fines, which apply even to teachers and authority figures found guilty. Real-life incidents were shared to drive home the seriousness of offences and the responsibility of society to remain vigilant.
The programme concluded with an interactive question and answer session, where students reflected on possible actions they would take upon encountering cases of child abuse or harassment. The session came to a close at 1.00 pm, leaving the participants empowered with knowledge and a renewed commitment to build safe and supportive environments for children and youth.
